UK accident investigators have told Irish owner North Atlantic Shipping to combat complacency among its seafarers after a power failure led to a feedership grounding off England.



The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said the master of the 508-teu Clonlee (built 1996) became “cognitively overloaded” on an under-manned bridge when the ship suffered an electrical blackout approaching the Port of Tyne in the early hours of 16 March last year



Engineers were unable to restore power immediately and the vessel ran aground on Little Haven Beach at about six or seven knots.

MAIB said the probable cause of the outage was an intermittent electrical fault within the ship’s electrical power supply and distribution systems.
