A Pacific International Lines (PIL) containership has rescued three crew from a stricken yacht that had been dismasted in 40 knots winds in the Southern Ocean.
The containership Southern Lily had earlier been re-routed to aid the craft which had run in to trouble 550 km north of New Zealand.
One man had already been swept overboard when he was likely hit by the boom in high winds, which later caused the rigging on the 20-metre yacht to collapse resulting in the death of another crewman.
