Evacuation "too late"

Costa Cruises chairman Pier Luigi Foschi said the evacuation of Costa Concordia was too late and “unjustifiable”.

Speaking to Il Corriere della Sera newspaper, he said no lives would have been lost had the 2006-built cruiseship been abandoned earlier.

He also said the company did not “reason in economic terms” in delaying an evacuation.

The Costa chief went on to say that captains have too much control and on-shore alarms should be triggered when a ship leaves its planned route.

Costa is not now paying for the lawyer of master Francesco Schettino, who has admitted taking the vessel close to the island of Giglio on Friday in a "navigational error."

At least 11 people died when the ship hit rocks and later capsized.

As for Schettino’s claim that he left the vessel early because he slipped and fell into a lifeboat, Foschi said that may be true, but he should still have got back on board.
