Italian shipowner Costa Cruises has rejected testimony from the captain of Costa Concordia that it ordered the near approach to the island of Giglio that caused its capsize.

The Carnival-owned company was responding to a claim from Francesco Schettino that he had been told to leave the pre-agreed route and make a “salute” to the island.
Costa said the route was planned on 13 January and it was up to the captain to ensure the safety of the course.
The company’s rules allow navigation five miles from the coast, the Genoa owner said, adding it always respects regulations.
The ship struck rocks 11 days ago, killing at least 13 people.
