Costa offers payout

Costa Cruises has agreed to compensate each uninjured passenger of the Costa Concordia disaster.

The Carnival Corp-owned cruiseship company has offered EUR 11,000 ($14,500) in damages and has promised to reimburse the cost of the cruise as well as other expenses.

The deal, negotiated with Italian consumer groups, could mean a payout in excess of EUR 40m if the offer is fully taken up by around 3,200 passengers.

But those accepting the offer must agree to drop any other legal claims in the future.

Passengers injured in the incident will be dealt with separately on a case by case basis.

One consumer group has urged passengers to reject the offer and to see if they have suffered any psychological damage from the incident.

As reported by TradeWinds today, one of the ship’s crew is suing Carnival Corp in a US court in what could be the first of many class action lawsuits against the company.

The Costa Concordia capsized after running aground off the Italian island of Giglio on 13 January.

Sixteen people have been found dead while 16 are still missing.
