Schettino jail bid fails

Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino will remain under house arrest after a bid to jail him failed.

Prosecutors went to court in Florence on Tuesday to ask that he be moved to prison while possible charges against him are evaluated.

But the motion was rejected and Schettino will be kept under supervision at a private address.

A defence bid to ease restrictions placed on him also failed.

When informed of the ruling, Schettino "maintained his serenity," lawyers said.

The captain faces potential charges of manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship in connection with the 13 January tragedy.

Italian media have speculated that he could face 2,697 years in jail if convicted: eight for each of the 300-plus people he allegedly left on board when he “tripped and fell” into a rescue boat, according to his own account.
