European Commission officials are to extend their probe into AP Moller Maersk’s acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd by an extra fortnight, without specifying why.

A ruling on shipping’s biggest ever takeover will now be issued by 29 July, said a memo from the Commission.

The EU can either approve the deal, launch a four-month investigation or refer it to national regulators.

Although no explanation was given for the extension, anti-trust regulations provide for more time if an EU member state asks to vet the deal, or if the company has offered to make concessions such as selling assets.
