Despite operating on the Great Lakes for more than 100 years, Canada’s Algoma Central increasingly sees the future elsewhere.

The Ontario-based owner first entered international markets in the 1990s with the addition of ocean-going self-unloaders. More recently, it brought in Ken Bloch Soerensen as president and chief executive. Soerensen’s background included stints as a general manager at several AP Moller-Maersk units and former chief executive of United Arab Shipping Co.
