The world’s second largest miner says its capital spending will be almost halved to $8bn by 2015.

Analysts say the reduction is more than they predicted and note Rio is tightening the purse strings more than its rivals, Reuters reports.

Rio plans to trim capital spending from $14bn this year, to $11bn in 2014 as the cut back is phased in.
