The Rio de Janeiro-based mining giant, whose exports feed the ton-mile rich Brazil-to-China bulker route, blamed the move on heavy rains, which have brought some of the company’s southeastern transport system to a standstill.
Vale says the situation could chop 3 million to 4 million tons from the company’s planned 2013 iron ore shipments. It only expects to be able to make up 2 million tons of those shipments in the first quarter of next year.
