Net earnings were $425m for the quarter ended 31 August 2014, versus the $571m in the year-ago period. Revenues inched up 2% to $33.3bn.

“Although Cargill’s first quarter was not as strong as last year, we had several areas of good performance and are optimistic about the opportunities ahead,” said chief executive David MacLennan.

He said trading results in Cargill’s ocean shipping division were reduced by what he described as an ‘erratic’ capesize market.
