Classic Maritime yesterday took Chang Myung Shipping's 169,900-dwt C Triumph (built 1999) for six to eight months at $7,950 daily.
The rate compared with the spot market average of below $2,752 daily on Monday.
Erik Nikolai Stavseth of Arctic Securities says capesize rates finished Monday only $440 per day above the all-time low of $2,316 daily recorded on 2 December 2008.
Capesize rates have been sliding for three successive weeks, while small climbs elsewhere have helped the Baltic Dry Index drag itself marginally away from the lowest level in history.
