The UK P&I Club has advised owners how to avoid the hazards of increasingly frequent self-heating incidents involving coal cargoes loaded at Indonesian ports in recent years

The insurer said the problem appears to be primarily related to the nature of the coal and may be exacerbated by the way it is handled prior to and during loading.

A practical tip provided by the club includes the regular monitoring of the cargo’s temperature.
