Fednav says it is the first shipowner to operate a Great Lakes bulk carrier equipped to comply with upcoming environmental rules for treating ballast water.

Canada’s largest dry bulk shipping company made the announcement as the 34,500-dwt Federal Caribou (built 2016) made call at the Port of Indiana in the United States.

The Federal Caribou is one of seven new oceangoing lakers that will be equipped with a ballast water treatment system (BWTS).
