Bulkers set for rough ride
Drewry Maritime Research pulls no punches in its latest assessment of the prospects for the dry bulk market.
DryShips secured a decent rate from Cosco for one of its panamaxes for a front haul but George Economou’s private company Cardiff Marine had to settle for a poor Atlantic rate for another unit.
It was not just Cardiff which suffered in the Atlantic, however, as numbers were weak for all panamaxes here though much stronger for supramaxes which once again saw an index gain.
Panamaxes
DryShips’ 73,200-dwt Positano (built 2000) was booked by Chinese giant Cosco for the trip from the Med and West Africa to China at $30,000 a day showing firmness in the front-haul market.
But Cardiff’s 75,200-dwt Sidari (built 2007) only managed $17,500 a day for a roundtrip from Europe to the US Gulf from Cargill.
Another Greek unit did marginally better with a similar itinerary, Egyptian Bulk Carriers spending $19,000 daily on Diamlemos’ 75,000-dwt Angelic Glory (built 2002).
Benemar spent a flat $23,500 per day for Ta-Ho Maritime’s 71,700-dwt Joa Ho (built 1997) for sail from India to China.
Supramaxes
Things were much better in the Atlantic for smaller tonnage. United Ocean’s 52,400-dwt Ocean Chie (built 2003) will run from the US Gulf to the Med at a strong $33,000 per day.
Another charterer paid just $1,000 a day shy of this to take Samartzis Maritime Enterprises of Greece’s 47,200-dwt VOC Daisy (built 1998) from the Red Sea to the Black Sea and Indian Ocean.
Shadab has the 43,100-dwt Romanos (built 1995) for a roundtrip from Pakistan to the Black Sea at a relatively lowly $16,500.
