Glencore has revealed it paid around $4bn to governments around the globe in 2016.

The commodities giant said $1.78bn of this amount relates to payments made in accordance with the EU transparency directive.

Glencore spent $5bn on government payments in 2015, of which $2.86bn was part of EU regulations.

Australia was once again the country to receive the biggest sum of money from Glencore, as the charterer paid $814.28m
