Footballing rivalry came to the boil in one of the most hotly contested events of the German shipping calendar.

In the 36th annual match between shipowners and ship financiers, the owners took the bragging rights this year with a convincing 4-2 victory at Hamburg’s Adolf-Jager Stadium.

A Banker United team stuffed with ship financing talent had its chances, including a penalty miss by HSH Nordbank’s Stefan Schlatermund. But the shipowners took the honours, helped by two goals from man of the match Stefan Winkel of TB Marine.

Rivalries were later set aside over a German sausage and a beer or two, and funds raised went towards the Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club in the port of Hamburg.
