The Panama Canal has welcomed more vessels during fiscal year 2017 - and logged record annual cargo tonnage.

A total of 13,548 vessels transited the expanded waterway between October 2016 and September 2017, a year-on-year increase of 3.3%.

The canal also reported growth in Panama Canal tons of cargo, which went up by 22.3% to 403.8m.

Panama Canal administrator Jorge Quijano said: “This year’s success is a testament to the expanded canal’s success.
