The Danish shipping behemoth was one of ten liner companies sharing contracts from the US Military worth almost $6bn in total.
For its particular contract it is said to have beaten off competition from twenty-one other shipping companies.
Maersk has secured the contract despite the fact that earlier this year it was found guilty of overcharging the US government to ship containers to Iraq and Afghanistan.
