Finland wants French probe

Finland is pressing the European Commission to investigate French state support for shipyards after STX Europe’s Turku plant lost a big cruiseship order.

Turku: lost out to France

The $1.3bn contract for Royal Caribbean Cruises’ third Oasis-class vessel went to STX France on 27 December, despite Turku building the first two.

The Finnish government also said it would set up a working group to examine the state of the maritime industry in the country.

Big job losses are on the cards at Turku following the disappointment.

The state was offering EUR 28.3m ($37.3m) in aid to sweeten the RCCL deal. It is not clear what France was offering, if anything.
