It wants to raise seafarer numbers by between 15% and 20% next year and add offshore vessels to its fleet. It has 4,000 Indian crew on its books.

Deputy director for Indian Sanklap Shukla told PTI: "Currently difficulty we are facing is that Indian seafarers are in fact the highest paid seafarers in the world.

"If we are able to stagnate the wages, don't start increasing the wages all over again, then we are looking at substantial increase.
