A total of 31 ships sailed through arctic waters last year, compared to 70 in 2013, the Alaska Public Radio Network (APRN) reports.
It cites Malte Humpert, executive director of the Arctic Institute, as playing down talks about immediate increased ship traffic.
He said: “I think 2014 kind of shows that development and arctic shipping may be further off than we might have thought a few years ago.”
