Greek detention

A six-month-old Irika Shipping bulk carrier has been released after a week-long detention in the United States.

The 75,000-dwt Iorana (built 2009) was detained in the Port of Baltimore, Maryland when the US Coast Guard (USCG) discovered a hose that was being used to bypass the vessel’s oily water separator (OWS).

The modification is called a “magic pipe”, which allows oil residue to bypass the OWS and be discharged directly overboard.

The USCG also cited the Greek-flagged ship for failing to properly maintain an accurate oil record book.

In 2007, TradeWinds reported that Irika was fined $750,000 and was placed on a four year probation by the US District Court in Tacoma for attempting to conceal illegal oil discharges.

Investigators found a flexible hose in the engine room of the 52,300-dwt Irika (built 2005). Crew members said it had been used to pump oil residue overboard rather than run it through an incinerator.

The Iorana was on charter to agricultural giant Cargill when the ship was detained in January.

The vessel is classed by the American Bureau of Shipping.
