Genco Acheron held in US

A panamax bulker owned by Genco Shipping & Trading is facing a safety audit after being detained by the US Coast Guard (USCG).

The USCG says some firefighting equipment was missing or improperly maintained.

The 72,500-dwt Genco Acheron (built 1999) was held by authorities in the port of Baltimore, Maryland after the crew was unable to perform a "satisfactory" fire drill, according to a release by the USCG.

The Coast Guard has requested an external audit to examine the emergency preparedness of the vessel and its crew after two attempts at a fire drill were unsuccessful.

The Hong Kong-flagged ship was serving a charter to steel giant Arcelor Mittal Shipping when the deficiencies were found on 24 February.

The panamax bulker is classed by Lloyd's Register and has P&I cover from Gard of Norway.
