India's Cochin Shipyard is eyeing a move into the small-scale LNG carrier market.

It has signed an MoU with Engineers India on design and construction of the ships.

The initiative falls under the ‘Make in India’ programme, the Hindu Business Line reported.

The ships will serve coastal and inland routes in the Indian sub-continent, the companies said.

Cochin has also acquired a licence for the construction of Gaztransport Technigaz (GTT) membrane technology for cargo containment systems.
