Shell LNGBV commissions new Lithuanian truck station

Shell’s purpose-built LNG bunker vessel (LNGBV) newbuilding has been used to commission KN’s new LNG truck loading station at Klaipeda, Lithuania.

KN says the 6,500-cbm Cardissa, which arrived in northern Europe from South Korea in late July, loaded 1,000 cbm of LNG from its chartered floating storage and regasification unit Independence (built 2014).

This was then shipped seven kilometres downstream to commission two of the five high-pressure, 1,000-cbm "bullet" tanks KN is installing to supply LNG to trucks.

The terminal operator said this month that Shell will deliver 1,000 cbm of LNG between 15 August and 30 September — the first small-scale delivery to Klaipeda.

A Shell spokesman declined to comment on the ship’s movements “ahead of time”.

From mid-2018, the truck loading tanks will be supplied by a 7,500-cbm LNGBV and small trading vessel ordered by Bernhard Schulte against a charter to Nauticor (formerly Bomin Linde).

The Cardissa, which is due to be named in Rotterdam next week, loaded a full cargo at the Gate LNG terminal in the Netherlands on 6 September. Data shows it discharged this at the Nynashamn LNG terminal in south-east Sweden before heading to Lithuania for its commissioning job.

The Cardissa is one of three of the world’s first LNGBVs to be put into operation this year.

In April, the 5,000-cbm Engie Zeebrugge (built 2016), which is controlled by Engie, NYK, Mitsubishi Corp and Fluxys, arrived at its home port, the Zeebrugge LNG terminal in Belgium.

This month saw the debut of Dutch shipowner Anthony Veder and Sweden’s Sirius Shipping’s ice-class 1A, 5,800-cbm Coralius (built 2017), which will offer bunkering services for Gasum subsidiary Skangas.

The vessel delivered a cargo to Skangas’ terminal at Ora in Fredrikstad, south-east Norway, and this week conducted its first LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operation.
