Russia and Finland signalled they back liquefied natural gas (LNG) as preferred marine fuel for shipping activities in the Arctic.

Finnish president Sauli Niinisto said Finland would prioritize the environment during its chairmanship of the Arctic Council. Among other issues, they would focus on the likely transition of Arctic shipping from fuel oil to LNG.

"The second measure is the transition of shipping in the Arctic to liquefied natural gas as marine fuel instead of fuel oil and other heavier ones," Niinisto said about potential issues for consideration at a future Arctic Summit.
