SCI eyes LNG growth

Indian owner in talks to expand managed gas carrier fleet to 20 ships.

Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) is in talks to expand its fleet of managed LNG carriers to 20 ships.

It told the DNA website it is negotiating with overseas companies to offer technical and commercial management.

Progress towards the 20-ship target would be gradual due to manpower limitations, according to Sunil Thapar, director of its bulker and tanker division.

SCI currently manages three LNG carriers on charter to Petronet.

The company also has a memorandum of understanding with GAIL India to cooperate on transport of 5.8m tonnes per annum of LNG from the US, and it could take a 26% stake in the nine ships planned to be used.
