Golar LNG said it is finalising a plan to convert several modern LNG carriers to floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs).

The New York-listed company said the conversion of “a number” of its tri-fuel diesel electric ships is a response to weak freight rates in the LNG carrier market but solid economics in the regasification side of the business.

“This approach has the benefit of being able to deliver ahead of any additional FSRU newbuildings ordered today and tailoring the regas facilities of the FSRU to match a particular application,” the company said in its earnings results.
