An LNG carrier controlled by Greek shipowner Maran Gas Maritime goes into the record books this week as the first LNG carrier to transit the newly expanded Panama Canal.

The Shell-chartered, 161,870-cbm newbuilding Maran Gas Apollonia entered the canal’s new locks on Monday carrying a cargo from Sabine Pass LNG.

BP’s 138,208-cbm British Merchant (built 2003) is expected to follow today with a cargo loaded in Trinidad.

The
