Sale-and-purchase activity has spiked this year as one of the few areas of shipping to have seen above average figures, according to Clarksons Research.

The world's largest shipbroker calculates that vessels of a combined 51 million deadweight have changed hands in the first six months of 2017.

This represents a 50% year-on-year rise and is 60% above the average trend seen since the financial crisis, according to Clarksons Research managing director Steve Gordon.
