Duo win Isacson award

Two students from Singapore and Sweden are the inaugural recipients of the Claes Isacson Scholarship set up in memory of the chief executive of the Gard insurance group who died last year.

The winners are Wang Wenhao taking a first degree in maritime studies at Nanyang Technological University and Daniela Gladun studying Shipping and Logistics at the Chalmers University of Technology.

The annual scholarship worth up to $20,000 was set up by Gard’s shipowner board to reflect Isacson’s commitment to education and training.

“This annual scholarship has been set up to help young people finance an education at university level, with a view to finding work within the shipping and marine insurance sectors. Wang and Daniela are both intent on pursuing a career in the maritime industries and we’re delighted to award the scholarship to two such deserving candidates,” said Gard chairman, Bengt Hermelin of Samco Shipholding.

Wenhao and Gladun were selected from 54 applicants from 13 countries, with each required to present a plan for completion of their studies and how they intended to make use of the scholarship.

The Claes Isacson scholarship can be awarded to a single applicant or split between two or more students each year.
