The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) said major vessel casualties rose for the second year in row, reaching levels last seen in 2007.

The number of total vessel losses decreased, but there was an increase in the average cost of each claim.

Donald Harrell, chairman of IUMI's facts and figures committee, also noted that increasing vessel sizes, particularly in the boxship sector, are creating more risk for cargo insurers.
