Two cyber criminals who defrauded a tanker owner have been brought to justice following an investigation by Signum Services, the private detective arm of Thomas Miller, the managers of the United Kingdom Mutual Steam Ship Assurance Association.
Adebayo Apanpa and Gerald Akubude helped perpetrate an e-mail fraud on the shipowner after hacking the Internet operation of a ship’s agent.
Using information gathered during the intrusion, they set up an e-mail account similar to that of the agent and sent the shipowner an £18,000 ($22,900) bill for disbursements that was duly paid.
