An Italian court has handed a 10-year jail sentence to the ex-captain of a container ro-ro (conro) vessel that was involved in a deadly accident.

Roberto Paoloni was captain of the 1,924-teu  Jolly Nero (built 1975) when it collided with a port control tower in Genoa on 7 May 2013, killing nine people and injuring four.

On 17 May, a court in Genoa sentenced the former master to a jail term of 10 years and four months, having found the former captain and three others guilty of multiple culpable homicide.
