The Trump administration has named the retired leader of the US Navy's marine transport division to run the US Maritime Administration.

The White House said it will nominate Rear Admiral Mark Buzby as maritime administrator, which will make him the top US official on domestic shipping matters if he is confirmed by the Senate.

The Virginian spent 34 years in the navy, where he served at sea on cruisers and destroyers, commanded the destroyer USS Carney and led the Military Sealift Command (MSC).
