A Rotterdam criminal court has found two Seatrade executives guilty of breaking European Union (EU) waste export laws in the sale of four reefer ships to South Asian shipbreaking yards.
The ruling represents the first prosecution of a ship demolition sale under EU waste export regulations.
The landmark ruling opens the door to the potential prosecution of hundreds of similar historic ship sales involving vessels that left Europe for demolition in non OECD countries.
