The expanded Panama Canal has recorded its third-best annual cargo figure.

Strong container traffic and newly introduced segments, as well as increased capacity, saw vessels carry 330.7m Panama Canal tons (PC/UMS) of goods through the waterway in its 2016 financial year.

A total of 13,114 vessels transited to 30 September.

Of these, 238 were neopanamax vessels taking advantage of the newly opened expanded canal during the first three months of its operation, accounting for 18.2m
