Sales of secondhand boxships are failing as sellers withdraw vessels from the market in the belief that a rising charter market for ships up to 5,000 teu will enable them to obtain a stronger price.

The 4,300-teu Barbados (built 2010) was reported sold last month for $6.9m, but the deal is understood to have failed. Brokers say the German owners are holding out for more after ships of a similar age and size fetched in excess of $10m.
