Florida’s Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has given the go ahead for major harbour deepening project.

The federal project to deepen the Jacksonville shipping channel to 47 feet to accommodate the largest containerships is set to begin construction by early 2018.

Along with significant state funding already in place, the $484m, 11-mile project recently received $21.5m in federal funds along with a new start designation making it eligible for further federal dollars.
