The charter market is kicking off the year in unseasonably strong fashion.

Rates are rising — albeit moderately — across the sectors at what is normally the quietest period of the year, when owners usually hang on for an improvement after the Chinese New Year.

This year, the Asian festivities are not until 16 February, but shrinking numbers of open ships are fuelling hopes that the market may be on the verge of turning.
