The Japanese group is understood to be financing the seven 14,000-teu newbuildings to be chartered to the Taiwanese liner operator, market sources say.

It is believed that the ships will be taken on charter by Evergreen for 10 years at rates of around $46,000 per day.

Details of the shipbuilder remain under wraps, but it is unlikely that the vessels will be built by Sumitomo’s own yards, including Oshima, which are not known for building containerships.
