The president of the country’s canal authority, ManuelCoronel Kautz, said in a statement on Monday that all the studies needed tostart building the waterway are being carried out in a timely manner.

But construction has been delayed by a year because theexact route between the Pacific and Atlantic has yet to be decided.

The government approved a deal last year that will seeChinese telecommunications tycoon Wang Jing, owner of Hong Kong’s HKND Group, buildand operate the waterway, which is intended to rival the Panama Canal.
