The Drive Green Project will use a 7,500-unit vessel on order with Japan Marine United as its flagship, with the remaining seven ships on order then becoming part of the scheme.
The idea is to use advanced hull design and energy-saving technology.
It will also install the world's first NOx generation suppression device on the main engine.
This is designed by Kawasaki Heavy Industry as an exhaust gas recirculation system.
