The 5,117-teu boxship Bellavia (built 2005) entered Long Beach in California with a cracked hull last year, after it earlier hit the side in the Panama Canal.
The US attorney’s office said Dauelsberg pleaded guilty to two federal environmental charges: not maintaining accurate records involving the overboard disposal of fuel and not reporting the “hazardous condition”.
It was fined $1m and ordered to pay another $250,000 to an environmental fund.
