Matson settles case

US container line Matson Navigation will pay $9m to settle claims arising from an alleged prohibited fuel charge passed on to the government.

It said it will also pay $950,000 costs to Mario Rizzo, who was suing it and Horizon Lines on behalf of the US department of justice.

“The settlement agreement is not an admission of liability by the company or any of its affiliates,” it said.

Rizzo alleged the lines defrauded the defense department’s surface deployment and distribution command (SDDC) by billing for prohibited fuel charges.

The owners dispute the claims.
