The funds have been awarded under the Transportation Infrastructure Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program.
The South Carolina port will use the funds to help upgrade its Wando Welch Terminal to accommodate post-panamax containerships.
The US Department of Transportation grant represents nearly 13% of the total estimated project cost for upgrading the terminal.
Work will include upgrades to structural support of the wharf and fendering system, as well as modifications to crane rails to accommodate two new super-post-panamax cranes.
