The Spliethoff Group company has been running its "Motorways of the Sea" ro-ro service from Bilbao to Portsmouth and Zeebrugge from 2007.
It had seen a steady increase in volumes and results, but it will now cease at the end of this year ahead of Emission Control Areas legislation coming into effect on 1 January.
"It is expected that up to 50% of the trailer volumes will return to the road.
