The Japanese liner operator’s appeared as a defendant in an amended version of the $1.82m case, the largest of several lodged over the casualty on the company’s 5,610-teu Suez Canal Bridge (built 2012).

As TradeWinds reported in September, the vessel was in the Atlantic en route to the United States when it encountered heavy weather, sending several containers overboard.

Indemnity filed its lawsuit that month over cargoes that it insured for apparel companies Old Navy, The Gap, Banana Republic and ES Sutton. The companies had shipped apparel in two containers from Bangladesh and Vietnam but both were lost overboard.

The case was filed through Indemnity’s attorney, Martin Casey at New York law firm Casey & Barnett.

Others targeted

The original lawsuit targeted one-ship owner Virgo Carriers, manager Sea Quest Ship Management, Yang Ming Marine Transport and Hanjin Shipping of South Korea.

But K Line was spared, even though the ship is listed in its fleet.

TradeWinds has requested comment from K Line. Hanjin Shipping has filed papers denying blame in the incident.
