Russia's transport ministry said vessels carried 2.9m people in 2014, up nearly three times from 2013.

"Our task is to transport daily about 50,000 passengers and 10,000 automobiles both ways," Igor Titov, head of state-run ferry operator United Transport Directorate, was quoted by news agency TASS as saying.

Numbers were running on average at about 26,000 passengers and 7,000 cars daily last year.
